In the gubernatorial race, Republican candidate Zach Lahn is campaigning on a ‘Make America Healthy Again’ platform. Lahn has proposed collaborating with biotechnology companies to improve cancer prevention and early detection. This comes as the University of Iowa estimates approximately 21,700 new cancer diagnoses and 6,400 deaths in the state this year.

Environmental factors are cited as significant contributors to the state's cancer crisis. These include high levels of radon in nearly 72% of Iowa homes and nitrate levels in drinking water that exceed EPA standards due to fertilizer and pesticide runoff.
