Iowa considers expanding community solar access for renters

Iowa lawmakers are considering legislation that could expand access to community solar, a model that allows renters and apartment residents to benefit from off-site solar projects. Currently, solar savings are often limited to homeowners who can install rooftop panels, but community solar enables participants to receive credits on their electricity bills by sharing energy from a nearby solar farm.

Iowa Business for Clean Energy has released a report suggesting that residents across the state could financially benefit from this model without impacting the bills of non-participants. This addresses long-standing concerns from utility companies regarding the potential costs to other customers.

Community solar programs are designed to increase energy accessibility, particularly for low-to-moderate-income households and those in high-density housing. Approximately 24 states currently allow community solar, providing a way to reduce monthly energy costs by an estimated 5% to 25% without requiring homeownership or equipment installation.
