Iowa Democratic candidates face scrutiny over tax records

Democratic congressional candidates in Iowa, Christina Bohannan and Sarah Trone Garriott, are facing criticism regarding their legislative records on taxation.

Christina Bohannan, running for Iowa’s First District, has been challenged over her previous votes in the Iowa State Legislature. Critics point to her opposition to legislation that eliminated state income taxes on retirement income for residents aged 55 and older. While Bohannan has expressed a commitment to overhauling the tax system, opponents argue her record contradicts her campaign messaging regarding seniors and working families.

Similarly, Sarah Trone Garriott is facing scrutiny over her stance on tax relief. Although her campaign materials claim a commitment to lower taxes and property tax caps, her legislative history includes voting against H.F. 2317. That bill aimed to reduce individual and corporate income tax rates and exempt 401(k)s, pensions, and IRAs from state taxes. Garriott had previously criticized such measures, arguing they would make life more expensive for hardworking Iowans.
