Iowa faces record heat impacting agriculture and university community

Iowa experienced one of its warmest starts to September on record, with average weekly temperatures reaching 79.8 degrees Fahrenheit, more than 11 degrees above normal. This heat comes as farmers prepare for the upcoming harvest. While corn maturity has reached 17%, the state's corn and soybean crops remain largely rated as good or excellent.

In a separate incident related to extreme heat, a member of the University of Iowa Hawkeye Marching Band, Derek Phillips, passed away following a heat-related cardiac arrest at Kinnick Stadium. The incident occurred during a season opener where temperatures reached the mid-90s with a heat index exceeding 100. Phillips, a third-year student and mellophone player, was taken to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, where his family later made the decision to remove life support.
