Iowa faces severe storms and tornado warnings

Iowa is facing severe weather as a volatile mix of heat, humidity, and a cold front triggers intense thunderstorms across the state. The National Weather Service issued severe thunderstorm warnings for several central counties, including Polk, Marion, and Warren, noting hazards such as 70 mph wind gusts and quarter-sized hail.

An extreme tornado warning was issued for Johnson and Linn Counties after a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was observed near the Cedar Rapids Municipal Airport. The storm was moving northeast at 50 mph, threatening areas including Cedar Rapids, Marion, and Ely. Residents were advised to seek immediate shelter in basements or interior rooms.

In addition to wind and tornado threats, flash flood warnings were issued for eastern Dallas and Polk Counties. Heavy rainfall totals are expected to reach between 1 and 3 inches in some locations, potentially leading to isolated flash flooding and ponding. Temperatures ahead of the front reached the low 90s with heat indices near 100 degrees in southern Iowa.
