Iowa Hawkeye Marching Band honors Derek Phillips with halftime tribute

The Hawkeye Marching Band honored former member Derek Phillips during a halftime performance at Kinnick Stadium. The band spelled out “DEREK” on the field during the song “Rainbow Connection” to commemorate the 20-year-old mellophone section leader.

Phillips collapsed from sudden cardiac arrest during the season opener on September 5, amid high temperatures and a heat index reaching at least 105 degrees. His family announced that after medical efforts at the University of Iowa Hospital were unsuccessful due to severe brain damage, they made the decision to remove him from life support.

In addition to the halftime formation, the band held a moment of silence and will wear black pins throughout the season. The band also announced it will keep the leader position of the H1 squad empty for the remainder of the 2026 campaign. Other collegiate bands, including Iowa State’s Cyclone Marching Band and Western Michigan’s Bronco Marching Band, have also offered tributes to Phillips.
