Iowa Hawkeyes defeat Northern Illinois 40-0 in season opener

The No. 22 Iowa Hawkeyes opened their season with a dominant 40-0 shutout victory against Northern Illinois at Kinnick Stadium. The Hawkeyes' offense was led by Kamari Moulton, who rushed for a career-high 183 yards and two touchdowns, including scoring runs of 50 and 37 yards in the first quarter.

The game provided a first look at the ongoing quarterback competition between Hank Brown and Jeremy Hecklinski. Brown earned the start, completing 12 of 20 passes for 129 yards and a touchdown to Tony Diaz. Hecklinski also saw action, completing 7 of 16 passes for 76 yards and a touchdown to Xavier Williams. While Brown showed veteran command, the competition for the starting role remains unresolved.

Defensively, Iowa was highly effective, holding Northern Illinois to just 120 total yards and limiting them to only seven rushing yards. The Hawkeyes' special teams also contributed with a 77-yard punt return touchdown by Evan James. Iowa will next host Iowa State in the Cy-Hawk game.
