Iowa heat safety measures implemented for football game

Warm and humid weather is expected to persist through the weekend, with temperatures in Iowa reaching the upper 80s and near 90 degrees. Heat indices may climb into the mid-90s, particularly in North Iowa. While some showers or thunderstorms are possible, much of the daytime period is expected to remain dry.

In response to the high temperatures, University of Iowa officials have implemented heat safety procedures for fans attending Saturday’s football game at Kinnick Stadium. To assist with hydration, fans may enter the stadium with unlimited sealed water bottles or empty refillable bottles, and 4,000 refillable bottles will be distributed at specific gates.

Medical resources have been expanded to prevent heat-related illness, including cooling areas provided by the Johnson County Homeland Security & Emergency Management Agency. Johnson County Ambulance Services will deploy a UTV in parking lots for rapid response, and medical staff from the Carver College of Medicine will be onsite to assist patients.
