Iowa measles outbreak reaches 17 confirmed cases

The measles outbreak in southern Iowa has expanded, with the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services confirming 17 cases. Health officials have identified a new potential exposure site at Sunnyside Grocery in Bloomfield. Individuals who visited the grocery store on August 15 between 11:00 and 14:00 may have been exposed to the virus.

The Jefferson County Health Center has issued a notice urging community members to remain vigilant as the outbreak spreads. Residents who suspect they or a household member may have measles are instructed to call the health center first rather than arriving in person, in an effort to prevent further transmission.

Measles is a highly contagious airborne virus. Health officials note that approximately 9 out of 10 unvaccinated individuals exposed to the virus will become infected. Symptoms typically appear 7 to 14 days after exposure and include high fever, cough, runny nose, and a rash. Complications can include pneumonia and brain swelling.
