Iowa political candidates campaign in Iowa City

Republican and Democratic candidates for federal office held campaign events in Iowa City during the Cy-Hawk game weekend.

Republican Congresswoman Mariannette Miller-Meeks, who is seeking a third term for Iowa’s First District, hosted a fundraiser attended by Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin and Florida Senator Rick Scott. Mullin warned that Democratic victories in such races could “change the fabric” of the country, while Scott emphasized the importance of maintaining Republican majorities in both the House and Senate. Miller-Meeks, who previously won her seat by a narrow margin, stated her platform focuses on the economy, healthcare, and government accountability.

On the Democratic side, Josh Turek campaigned for the open U.S. Senate seat against Republican Ashley Hinson. Turek’s platform centers on addressing the rising cost of living, specifically regarding housing, childcare, and healthcare, to support younger voters.
