Iowa lawmakers propose diesel export ban to lower fuel prices

U.S. lawmakers and candidates in Iowa are calling for measures to combat soaring diesel prices, which have reached over $6.50 a gallon in the state. Senator Chuck Grassley has proposed an embargo on diesel exports, arguing that high fuel costs are “killing farmers income.”

In the race for Iowa’s open U.S. Senate seat, both major candidates have proposed relief measures. Democrat Josh Turek has suggested a temporary suspension of the federal gas tax and a halt to diesel exports. Republican nominee Ashley Hinson has also called for a pause on diesel exports, a suspension of the gas tax, and the creation of a diesel relief program for farmers and truckers.

While some Republican leaders, including Senate Majority Leader John Thune, have expressed openness to exploring an export ban, others note that the conflict in Iran is a primary driver of global prices. Critics of the export ban proposal argue that restricting U.S. supply could tighten global markets and potentially increase domestic distribution issues.
