Iowa residents divided over impact of factory farming

A survey of 1,051 Iowans conducted by Sentient and SimpleOpinions has highlighted the complex impact of factory farming, formally known as Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs), on the state. The findings reveal a landscape shaped by both economic necessity and significant environmental and health concerns.

Respondents noted various consequences of large-scale industrial animal agriculture, including polluted private wells, air quality issues, and a cancer crisis. While some residents associate the industry with economic prosperity, others are actively campaigning for cleaner water. The survey indicates that water quality is emerging as a defining issue for the upcoming fall elections in Iowa, with public opinion often split along demographic and political lines.
