Mesabi Metallics to build $15 billion steel mill in Iowa

Mesabi Metallics has announced plans to construct a $15 billion steel mill in Lee County, Iowa. Described by President Donald Trump as the largest steel plant in the United States, the facility is expected to be operational by 2030.

The project is projected to create 1,750 permanent jobs with an average pay of $49 per hour, alongside 6,000 temporary construction roles. In its initial phase, the plant aims to produce 7.5 million tons of steel annually by processing iron ore from a Mesabi Metallics-owned mine in Minnesota.

To facilitate the investment, Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds has called for a special legislative session on October 2. The session will focus on amending the state’s Major Economic Growth Attraction (MEGA) program to provide necessary incentives for the project. The state and Mesabi Metallics have already executed a memorandum of understanding regarding the partnership.
