Iowa voter registration dispute emerges between ACLU and election integrity advocates

The ACLU of Iowa and election integrity advocates are engaged in a dispute regarding the removal of ineligible voters from registration lists ahead of upcoming elections. Advocates have attempted to identify hundreds of registered voters who have moved out of the state, utilizing Iowa laws that allow citizens to challenge registrations based on factors such as address changes.

The ACLU has issued warnings to all 99 county auditors in Iowa, stating that processing these challenges may violate state and federal law. The organization specifically cites Section 8 of the National Voter Registration Act of 1993, which prohibits systematic removal of voter names within 90 days of an election. This follows a previous instance where Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate ordered counties to restore voters who had been improperly removed due to challenges falling within that restricted 90-day window.
