IOWN technology enables ultra-high-speed data transfer in Japan
Researchers and telecommunications providers in Japan have successfully demonstrated ultra-high-speed data transfer between storage locations using the All-Photonics Network (APN), a core technology of the next-generation IOWN infrastructure. The demonstration, conducted by the National Institute of Informatics, RIKEN, the University of Tokyo, and NTT East and West, achieved transfer speeds exceeding 750 Gbps over an 800 Gbps line bandwidth.
The experiment connected the RIKEN Center for Computational Science in Kobe with the University of Tokyo's Kashiwa campus. This proves that high-speed, low-latency communication is possible even over long distances, which is essential for managing the massive datasets generated by AI, IoT, and supercomputing projects like Fugaku.
Beyond research infrastructure, the IOWN Global Forum is expanding the technology's application into the mobility sector. By partnering with organizations like 5GAA and AECC, the forum aims to use IOWN to build digital twins for autonomous driving and smart cities, enabling seamless connectivity between vehicles, mobile networks, and the cloud.
