iPad functionality expanded for use as external monitor and gaming screen

Apple iPads can be utilized as external monitors or gaming screens through various hardware and software methods. By leveraging UVC (USB Video Class) support introduced in iPadOS 17, users with USB-C equipped iPads can connect gaming consoles like the PlayStation 5 or Nintendo Switch using a compatible HDMI-to-USB-C capture card and a video app.

For Mac users, the open-source application OpenDisplay provides a free alternative to services like Sidecar or Duet Display. Developed by Philip Poloczeck, the app allows an iPad or iPhone to act as an extended Retina display via USB or WLAN, supporting touch and scroll functions without requiring a subscription or account.

Additionally, iPads can connect directly to standard monitors. Models with USB-C or Thunderbolt ports can use a USB-C to HDMI adapter to output video, while older models using Lightning connectors require a Lightning Digital AV Adapter, though output is limited to 1080p.
