IPCC outlines priority actions for energy‑efficient building renovations

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) does not prescribe specific renovation tasks for individual homes. Its assessment reports set out the overall trajectories needed to limit global warming, highlighting that the building sector accounts for a large share of energy‑related emissions from heating, hot water and electricity. The reports advise a holistic approach that first cuts heating and cooling demand, replaces fossil‑fuel equipment with low‑carbon solutions, improves insulation, ventilation and summer comfort, and enhances resilience to climate extremes.

IPCC reports are produced by synthesising thousands of peer‑reviewed scientific studies. International teams of climate scientists, economists, ecosystem specialists and social scientists collaborate voluntarily, and the drafts undergo multiple rounds of external expert review and government scrutiny before the final summary for policymakers is approved. While governments can discuss wording, they cannot change the underlying scientific conclusions. The findings aim to guide public authorities, professionals and households in prioritising the most effective measures for building retrofits.
