Monza retail shifts as Iperal opens new sustainable supermarket

The retail landscape in Lombardy is undergoing significant shifts, marked by both major urban regeneration projects and local business closures.

In Monza, Iperal is set to inaugurate a new supermarket on September 30 at the former Colombo site. The 18,000 square meter redevelopment includes a 2,500 square meter commercial space, a RistoSelf, a Bar Bistrò, and the Villoresi Park. The project features sustainable elements such as a biolake for rainwater management, a sports area, and a playground, while providing 127 jobs.

Conversely, Monza's historic center is facing commercial challenges. Punti e Fantasia, a long-standing retailer, will close its Monza location at the end of the year due to changing market conditions and urban decay, though it will maintain operations in Milan and Lugano.

In Segrate, Lidl Italia has opened a new energy-efficient supermarket in the Gaslini industrial area following a 4 million euro investment. Meanwhile, the massive Westfield Milano shopping center project remains stalled due to infrastructure uncertainties regarding the M4 metro extension and the Cassanese Bis roadworks.
