Dominican Republic police implement reforms and technical training
The Dominican Republic's National Police are implementing various reforms and operational updates to combat crime. The institution reported progress in its five-year reform process, which includes the incorporation of 11,000 young officers, an increase in street presence, and the deployment of over 8,000 body cameras.
To enhance technical capabilities, the Police Higher Education Institute (IPES) conducted international training for 80 agents. The program focused on crime scene analysis, neurobiology of criminal behavior, and the application of artificial intelligence in investigations.
On the legislative front, authorities are calling for an update to Law 50-88 on Drugs and Controlled Substances. The National Directorate for Drug Control (DNCD) noted that the 38-year-old law lacks the necessary framework to address modern challenges, such as synthetic drugs and evolving organized crime tactics.
Recent field operations have also resulted in several high-profile incidents, including the death of a fugitive known as ‘El Sicario’ during a capture attempt in Dajabón, the arrest of suspects in a vehicle shooting in San Juan, and the recovery of a stolen motorcycle in San Cristóbal.
