iPhone 18 Pro introduces mechanical variable aperture camera features
The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max feature significant camera upgrades, most notably the introduction of a mechanical variable aperture system. The main 48MP Fusion camera utilizes a 6-blade aperture that allows users to manually or automatically select between four levels: f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8, and f/4.0.
This physical aperture control differs from the existing digital depth-of-field features. While digital depth-of-field uses image processing to simulate background blur, the physical aperture adjusts the actual amount of light entering the sensor and changes the depth of field naturally. The variable aperture is exclusive to the main camera, whereas digital depth-of-field effects can be applied to ultra-wide and telephoto lenses and can be adjusted after the photo is taken.
Additionally, the devices include a suite of Pro Controls, enabling manual adjustments for shutter speed, white balance, and histogram monitoring. These tools are designed to provide professional-level creative control over exposure and motion, such as capturing fast-moving subjects or creating long-exposure light trails.
