iPhone taxes in Turkey exceed device base prices

High taxation on new Apple smartphone models in Turkey has reached levels where total taxes exceed the base price of the devices. For the iPhone Duo, which has a retail price of 230,000 TL, the tax burden is calculated at 117,040 TL based on a pre-tax price of 112,960 TL. This total includes a 1% Ministry of Culture and Tourism share, a 12% TRT bandrol fee, a 50% Special Consumption Tax (ÖTV), and a 20% Value Added Tax (KDV).

Similarly, the iPhone 18 Pro, priced at 137,999 TL, carries a total tax amount of 70,224 TL against a base price of 67,775 TL.

In a related economic comparison, a consumer's decision to invest in gold rather than purchasing an iPhone 13 five years ago resulted in significant gains. A 29,000 TL investment in 42 grams of gold grew to a value of 282,660 TL, highlighting the contrast between depreciating technology and appreciating precious metals in the Turkish market.
