Ipiales, Colombia and Tambogrande, Peru step up flood and heat risk preparedness

The municipal risk office in Ipiales, Colombia, has intensified monitoring of rainfall and projected heat waves, coordinating with rescue agencies and launching public campaigns on water use, fire prevention, and flood‑risk awareness. Officials say the town is preparing for possible vegetation fires, water‑supply reductions and agricultural impacts as the rainy season continues and temperatures rise.

In Tambogrande, a district of Piura Province in northern Peru, residents warn that the lack of riverbank defenses leaves families vulnerable to river‑overflows, recalling the 2017 floods that isolated dozens of households. They urge authorities to accelerate construction of defenses along the right bank of the Piura River to protect over 500 hectares of mango, lime and banana crops, as well as homes and access roads.
