Ipiales water crisis leads to digital monitoring platform and citizen watchdog
Ana Belén Arteaga, director of the Departmental Health Institute of Nariño (IDSN), urged authorities to provide a definitive solution to the water shortage in Ipiales, stressing that reliable, safe water is essential for public health. She called for structural projects to modernize the aqueduct system and ensure a stable supply.
The institute launched a digital platform that lets residents check the Water Quality Risk Index (IRCA) for their water, offering transparent, up‑to‑date information on sanitation conditions and risk levels. The tool is intended to empower the community and improve preventive health measures.
The citizen oversight group Veeduría Ciudadana por el Derecho al Agua pledged ongoing monitoring of municipal commitments, warning that they will act if promised actions are not fulfilled. The group demanded clear timelines, transparent communication, and concrete steps to guarantee the fundamental right to potable water for all Ipialeños.
