Colombia water supply: Quality and shortage crises in Ipiales, Facatativá, and Piedecuesta

Multiple municipalities in Colombia are facing water supply and quality challenges. In Ipiales, the Instituto Departamental de Salud de Nariño (IDSN) has issued warnings regarding high turbidity and a lack of residual chlorine in the water supply. Authorities have restricted direct consumption from the Versalles Well to prevent health risks, while local councilman Gustavo Estupiñán has demanded an immediate emergency plan from the municipal administration to address structural failures and operational issues.

In Facatativá, authorities have taken steps to mitigate shortages caused by the dry season. The energization of the San Rafael 3 well, coordinated with Enel Colombia, is now contributing 30 liters per second to the local network. Additionally, the Cundinamarca Governorate has allocated 8.77 billion pesos to find new underground water sources, including a deep well project in La Guapucha.

Meanwhile, residents in Piedecuesta have reported water arriving with unpleasant odors and a reddish-brown color, sparking community concerns regarding potential health risks. Local authorities have yet to issue a formal response to these specific complaints.
