IPN develops AI to detect breast cancer

Researchers at the Instituto Politécnico Nacional (IPN) have developed an artificial intelligence system designed to accelerate the analysis of mammographies and identify potential breast cancer lesions. The tool classifies studies into low, medium, or high-risk levels by analyzing medical images alongside clinical data, such as obesity, hormone therapy, and family history.

Developed by a team including doctoral student Elsy Guadalupe Cruz Murrieta and researcher José Eduardo Valdez Rodríguez, the system was trained using data from approximately 700 Mexican patients in collaboration with Centro Médico ABC and ISSEMYM. The project aims to assist specialists in prioritizing patients who require urgent review, addressing the challenge of limited medical personnel relative to the population of women of detection age in Mexico.
