IPOA warns of rising attacks and killings of Kenyan police officers

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has expressed grave concern regarding a series of attacks and killings targeting police officers across Kenya. In a statement released on September 23, the authority warned that these incidents undermine public safety and the legitimacy of the police service.

Among the casualties noted were Chief Inspector Adan Isaak Somo and Constable Bethwel Kibet of the Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU), who were killed during an ambush in Gotu, Isiolo County, on September 16. The attack also resulted in the deaths of a National Police Reservist and two civilians. Additionally, an ASTU officer was injured in an ambush by suspected livestock raiders in Burat Ward, Isiolo County, and Sergeant Gladys Nyaguthe Kirika was found dead in Kagira, Kiambu County.

IPOA has called on the National Police Service to implement “fit-for-purpose strategies” based on evidence and good practice to protect officers and improve community engagement. The authority emphasized that a safe and professional police service is essential for maintaining public confidence.
