IPPR urges UK to pursue medium-term EU membership

A new report by the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) urges the UK government to make full membership of the European Union a medium-term goal. The think tank argues that rejoining the bloc is essential for the UK to protect its prosperity, security, and democracy against global challenges, including Russian aggression, Chinese economic coercion, and political unpredictability in the United States.

Polling commissioned by the IPPR and Persuasion UK indicates a shift in public sentiment, with 52 per cent of respondents expressing a desire to rejoin the EU, compared to 29 per cent who wish to remain outside. This trend is also noted among Labour voters; 54 per cent of those considering a move to Reform UK still favor EU membership.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham has indicated that the UK's long-term relationship with the EU, including the possibility of rejoining, will be a topic of discussion at a Brussels summit on 20 November. Burnham has previously suggested that a future election manifesto could include a referendum on Brexit. However, Reform UK leader Nigel Farage has signaled strong opposition, stating that the UK would not vote to rejoin if a second referendum were held.
