IPTSP researchers advance tuberculosis vaccine studies

Researchers at the Institute of Tropical Pathology and Public Health (IPTSP) of the Federal University of Goiás (UFG) are advancing studies to develop new tuberculosis vaccines. Professor Ana Paula Kipnis noted that while the BCG vaccine protects children against severe forms of the disease, it does not provide protection for adolescents or adults. This gap highlights the urgent need for new immunization strategies, especially as Brazil continues to see approximately 80,000 cases annually and a rise in related deaths.

In related public health discussions, IPTSP Director Yves Mauro Ternes addressed the state of the Unified Health System (SUS) in Goiás. Ternes emphasized the importance of strengthening the SUS through planning and transparency rather than just increased funding. He highlighted telemedicine as a vital tool for expanding specialized care to remote regions and discussed the necessity of addressing healthcare queues and the National Immunization Program.
