IPU Assembly in Tanzania addresses death penalty and climate resilience

The 153rd Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly in Arusha, Tanzania, has brought together global parliamentarians to discuss human rights, governance, and climate resilience.

During a panel moderated by German Bundestag member Claudia Roth, participants reaffirmed their commitment to abolishing the death penalty. The International Commission against the Death Penalty (ICDP) suggested four key measures for states to end capital punishment, including legislative action, oversight of fair-trial safeguards, public engagement, and voting to advance international abolitionist commitments. The discussion noted recent progress, such as Lebanon’s abolition of the death penalty in August 2026, while acknowledging high execution rates globally.

An Indian parliamentary delegation, led by Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh, participated in several key sessions. The delegation attended a debate on urgent parliamentary action regarding climate-related disasters and resilience in the Himalayan region, a proposal introduced by Nepal. Other sessions included discussions on enhancing good governance through inclusivity, the role of United Nations machinery in conflict prevention, and the impact of artificial intelligence on the future of work.
