Iqaluit council postpones hoisting Greenland flag in solidarity
In January, the Iqaluit City Council voted to raise the flag of Greenland as a gesture of solidarity with the neighboring Inuit territory. Mayor Solomon Awa emphasized the cultural and historical ties, stating, “This is our hunting ground… this is where we grew up.”
The flag has not yet been flown. City spokesperson Geoffrey Byrne explained that the council waited for the Inuit Circumpolar Council’s general assembly in July, hoping to coordinate the ceremony, but the assembly concluded without a display of support. Byrne said the city still intends to raise the flag but has not set a new timeline.
The issue highlights Iqaluit’s focus on local priorities such as infrastructure upgrades while maintaining symbolic support for Greenland amid broader geopolitical remarks from the United States.
