Iquique Municipal Council re-awards dangerous sign demolition tender

The Iquique Municipal Council has re-awarded a tender for the demolition of dangerous advertising signs following a delay that significantly increased costs. The original contract, initially awarded in April to Constructora de Demoliciones, Movimientos de Tierra y Transporte DEMCO Limitada for approximately $53 million, was invalidated because the firm failed to submit the required documentation within the ten-day legal timeframe.

The new contract has been awarded to Sociedad de Demoliciones Mario Porzio S.A. for over $74 million, representing a budget increase of more than $21 million.

Local officials expressed concern regarding the physical risks posed by these structures, specifically highlighting a critical situation at a sports field in the southern sector of the city. A 60-kilogram steel plate is currently hanging precariously over the area, posing a threat to residents and visitors. The municipality noted that previous delays were partly due to complex judicial disputes involving private parties.
