Irakli Kobakhidze addresses UN and discusses Swiss-Georgian relations

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze addressed the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, emphasizing Georgia’s sovereignty, its role in the South Caucasus, and its economic ambitions via the Middle Corridor. He highlighted the importance of the equal application of international rules to all states and expressed a commitment to peaceful conflict resolution.

On the sidelines of the assembly in New York, Kobakhidze met with Swiss Vice President and Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis. The discussion focused on bilateral relations and the role of Switzerland as a mediator between Georgia and Russia, given the lack of formal diplomatic ties between the two nations. Kobakhidze expressed gratitude for Switzerland’s support regarding Georgia’s territorial integrity and its policy of not recognizing Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

The two leaders also discussed the role of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), with Switzerland set to hold the chairmanship in 2026. A visit by Cassis to Georgia is planned for October to further discuss regional security and the OSCE’s involvement.
