Iran and Houthis threaten Middle East oil routes as Trump declines military intervention
Iran is utilizing its proxy, the Houthi movement in Yemen, to increase its negotiating leverage against the United States and Donald Trump. The Houthis' strategic position allows them to threaten key oil transit routes, specifically the Strait of Bab-el-Mandeb, complementing the existing tensions in the Strait of Hormuz.
This escalation has led to a reduction in available Middle Eastern oil export routes and a subsequent rise in energy prices. While Saudi Arabia has reportedly requested U.S. military intervention in Yemen on two occasions without success, Donald Trump has declined to change his stance. Trump described Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman as a “good friend” and stated that the Houthis have contacted him to express they do not want U.S. military action.
Meanwhile, the Houthis claim that Saudi Arabia conducted 129 airstrikes against them within a 48-hour period, though they deny having had contact with the U.S. administration.
