Iran and Oman agree on framework for safe navigation in Strait of Hormuz

Iran and Oman have agreed on a phased framework to facilitate safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. The agreement aims to address the repercussions of recent conflict in the region while safeguarding the sovereign rights of both nations. Key components of the framework include the establishment of a joint temporary navigational corridor and a joint project to clear mines from the strategic waterway.

Technical negotiations are expected to continue to establish a permanent navigation route and determine the future administration of the Strait. This includes developing mechanisms for information-sharing, traffic management, and the provision of security services. Both nations emphasized the importance of involving other regional states bordering the Persian Gulf in these discussions.

In a related diplomatic effort, Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani met with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi in Tehran to discuss the same provisional framework. Qatar expressed support for the initiative to create favorable conditions for regional de-escalation and dialogue. The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical global route for hydrocarbon and goods transport, making its stability vital for international energy markets and supply chains.
