Iran and Oman to announce new Strait of Hormuz navigation agreement
Iran and Oman are set to announce a bilateral agreement in Muscat regarding new, safe navigation routes through the Strait of Hormuz. The agreement, which involves establishing routes through Iranian territorial waters, aims to address regional maritime tensions but does not constitute a full reopening of the strategic waterway.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi emphasized that the reactivation of the strait is contingent upon the United States fulfilling its commitments under the Islamabad Memorandum signed in June. Tehran's demands for full reopening include the cessation of hostilities, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanon, the lifting of the blockade on Yemen, the release of $24 billion in frozen assets, and an end to interference in its nuclear and missile programs.
A meeting in Oman is expected to include representatives from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Iraq. However, Bahrain has declined to participate, citing previous Iranian attacks on its civilian infrastructure. Meanwhile, the Trump administration has indicated a preference for focusing future negotiations on Tehran's nuclear program rather than the status of the strait, with President Trump expressing satisfaction with current U.S. maritime control in the region.
