Pakistan-Iran border trade suspended at Taftan and Gabd-Rimdan crossings

Commercial trade has been suspended at key border crossings between Pakistan and Iran, specifically at the Taftan and Gabd-Rimdan checkpoints. The suspension follows a memorandum from Pakistan’s Ministry of Commerce, which revoked previous trade orders effective immediately.

Pakistani authorities, including Shahid Rind, an adviser to the Balochistan chief minister, stated the closure is a temporary measure intended to enhance security, prevent smuggling, and improve border administration. Conversely, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei attributed the disruption to technical issues and the implementation of precautionary measures.

The halt has caused significant logistical disruptions, leaving hundreds of freight vehicles stranded. These vehicles are carrying essential commodities, including liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), rice, and fresh fruit. There are growing concerns regarding the impact on LPG supplies and potential price surges in Pakistan. To mitigate losses, officials are prioritizing the processing of perishable agricultural products. While commercial movement is halted, some reports indicate that passenger traffic through certain crossings remains operational.
