Qatar denies holding Iranian pilots amid Strait of Hormuz tensions

Qatar has denied Iranian allegations that it is holding three military pilots in custody following an airspace violation in March. Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed Al Ansari stated that the remains of one pilot have already been repatriated to Iran. Doha maintains that it invited an Iranian technical team to investigate the search and rescue operations, but the invitation has gone unanswered.

Simultaneously, regional tensions remain high regarding the Strait of Hormuz. Qatar suggested that a potential agreement between Iran and Oman regarding the strait could facilitate a resumption of negotiations between the United States and Iran.

In contrast, U.S. President Donald Trump stated there are no current or scheduled negotiations with Iran and asserted that the naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz remains in effect. Iranian officials, including Parliament President Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, have countered that the strait will not be reopened until the United States fulfills commitments to lift sanctions and the blockade.
