Iran and Russia approach agreement on Rasht-Astara railway

Iran and Russia are nearing the signing of an executive agreement for the Rasht-Astara railway project, a critical component of the International North-South Transport Corridor. Kazem Jalali, Iran's ambassador to Russia, stated that the two nations are planning the signing ceremony to be attended by high-ranking officials.

Beyond transportation, the two countries are engaged in practical negotiations regarding energy cooperation, including the potential transfer of Russian gas to Iran and the development of necessary infrastructure. Jalali also emphasized the importance of continuing joint projects, such as the construction of units two and three of the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant, once regional conditions stabilize.

The Rasht-Astara railway, a 162-kilometer stretch, is considered a missing link in the western section of the North-South corridor. This corridor, originally established in 2000 by Russia, India, and Iran, aims to facilitate cargo transit toward Europe and has since expanded to include various other nations.
