Iran and Russia seek to strengthen energy security and cooperation

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is visiting Moscow for the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GEFC) summit, aiming to consolidate a strategic partnership with Russia and promote multilateralism. The visit follows recent diplomatic efforts, including a visit to Tehran by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, to translate existing strategic treaties into concrete cooperation.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has highlighted that closer energy cooperation between Iran, Russia, and other GEFC members could enhance supply security, attract investment, and diversify routes. Key areas for collaboration include joint investments in oil and gas fields, technology transfers, and infrastructure development. Such projects are viewed as a means to increase production and mitigate the impact of unilateral sanctions.

Araghchi also emphasized the need for coordination among gas producers to protect critical infrastructure and manage geopolitical shocks. He noted that tensions involving Iran have impacted global energy supplies, particularly regarding the Strait of Hormuz. According to data cited from the International Energy Agency, over 112 billion cubic meters of liquefied natural gas passed through the Strait in 2025, with approximately 90% of that volume destined for Asian markets.
