Iran and Syria explore new diplomatic ties following Assad's fall
Following the fall of Bashar al-Assad's government in late 2024, Iran and Syria appear to be exploring the possibility of establishing new diplomatic ties. After the collapse of the previous regime, relations between Tehran and Damascus were severed, and the new Syrian administration has not yet adopted the same approach toward Iran that its predecessor held toward Russia.
During a speech at the United Nations General Assembly, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian indicated a desire to assess the potential for repairing relations, calling for Damascus to act based on ‘Islam and justice.’ Analysts suggest this signals that Iran recognizes it cannot restore the relationship to its pre-2024 levels but is testing the waters for a new era of engagement.
A Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs advisor, Mohammad al-Jaffal, responded with a degree of flexibility, noting that while the principle of establishing future relations was not rejected, any reconnection is conditional upon Iran reviewing its past policies and respecting Syrian national sovereignty. While Syria seeks to de-escalate tensions with all nations, experts note that a return to the previous ‘Iran axis’ remains unlikely. Potential mutual interests include energy cooperation, transit routes, and regional power balancing.
