Iran approves new economic grouping system for households

The Iranian Cabinet has approved a new directive for the identification and economic grouping of households into high, middle, and low economic categories. To implement this, various government agencies, including the Central Bank, the Tax Organization, and ministries of energy and oil, are required to share data regarding citizens' financial and social status.

Criteria for the high economic group include owning residential land valued at over 50 billion tomans, non-residential land exceeding 75 billion tomans, or residential units worth more than 75 billion tomans. Additionally, households with passenger vehicles and pickups valued at over 7.5 billion tomans, those in the top 5% of energy consumers, or those in the top 5% of stock market investment values will be classified as high-income. Other indicators include being in the top 2.5% of bank loan recipients, holding commercial cards, or residing abroad for more than 182 days a year.

The Tax Organization will provide data on salaries, rental income, bank interest, and property assets to the Ministry of Cooperatives, Labour, and Social Welfare. Notably, personnel from the armed forces, the Atomic Energy Organization, the Ministry of Intelligence, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs are exempt from this directive.
