Iran bans luxury vehicle imports to prioritize economic models
The President of Iran has ordered a halt to the importation of luxury vehicles, a decision aimed at prioritizing the supply of more economical car models. The Minister of Industry, Mine and Trade confirmed that this restriction applies to all luxury imports, including models such as the BMW 7 Series, Toyota Land Cruiser 300, and Prado. Notably, the ban also extends to vehicles intended for import by Iranians residing abroad.
This policy shift follows recent ambiguities regarding the Central Bank of Iran’s stance on vehicle imports and the suspension of the import system for expatriates. The Central Bank has previously expressed concerns regarding the use of foreign currency by individuals, fearing that selling imported cars for Rials and subsequently converting those funds back into foreign currency could increase pressure on national currency reserves.
Currently, fewer than 1,000 used vehicles are held at national customs. While the entry of these vehicles into the market is expected to help moderate prices to some extent, experts suggest the impact may be limited given the vast scale of the Iranian automotive market. The decision is expected to affect customs revenues and the activities of companies involved in the import sector.
