France to expel two Iranian diplomats following Tehran's ban on French staff FAST-MOVING

France has announced the upcoming expulsion of two Iranian diplomats in retaliation for Tehran's decision to bar two French embassy staff from re-entering Iran. The diplomatic rift follows an incident on July 19 in Tehran, where two French diplomats, including a cultural attaché, were briefly detained and interrogated by Iranian security services. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot described the event as an “extremely serious act of intimidation” and a “flagrant violation of diplomatic immunity,” alleging that one diplomat was physically mistreated.

Iran has denied any physical abuse, stating the diplomats were only briefly questioned for interfering in internal affairs under the guise of engaging with civil society. The Iranian Foreign Ministry, through spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei, asserted that the diplomats violated the Vienna Convention. Furthermore, the Iranian Intelligence Ministry claimed the French officials were involved in a scheme to exert foreign influence and undermine Iran's independence.

The tension also involves the detention of two Iranian graphic designers, Aria Kasaei and Elahe Naghilou, who were arrested during a meeting with the French diplomats regarding the Villa Zadig cultural project. Their families have called for French intervention, noting the artists have been held without effective access to independent legal counsel.
