Iran accuses IAEA of bias ahead of UN Security Council review
Iran has accused the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) of political bias and failing to act impartially regarding its nuclear program. These allegations were made by Hossein Derakhshandeh, deputy director of the Iranian Atomic Energy Organization, during an IAEA ministerial conference in Incheon, South Korea.
The accusations coincide with a scheduled UN Security Council review of Iran’s alleged non-compliance with nuclear commitments. This follows a September resolution by the IAEA Board of Governors that criticized Iran for failing to meet non-proliferation obligations and referred the matter to the UN Security Council.
Tensions have escalated following military actions in the region. Iran reported that it restricted cooperation with international inspectors after attacks by Israel and the United States in June 2025, a situation exacerbated by further bombings in February 2026. Derakhshandeh characterized these attacks on nuclear facilities as illegal and criticized the IAEA’s response as insufficient.
