Iran-China diplomacy intensifies as Araghchi visits Beijing

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi recently traveled to Beijing to engage in diplomatic efforts with China. This visit is viewed as part of Tehran’s strategy to activate diplomacy with strategic partners and create new capacities to counter pressure from Washington.

According to diplomatic analyst Kourosh Ahmadi, China’s recent communications regarding the meeting between the two foreign ministers indicate a shift in tone. Beijing has focused on three primary pillars: expressing readiness to play a more constructive role in promoting peace in the Persian Gulf and supporting Iran’s legitimate interests; emphasizing the urgent need to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to ensure the safe and unhindered passage of international waterways and energy supply chains; and noting the inadequacy of the current Middle East security structure, which requires reform and strengthening.

The diplomatic movement occurs as China seeks to manage risks associated with energy route insecurity and prevent unfavorable shifts in the regional geopolitical balance. China has also called for restraint from both Iran and the United States, urging a return to previous agreements and the reconstruction of negotiating mechanisms.
