Iran condemns French police response to student protests
Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has called on France to respect human rights following the violent suppression of student and worker protests across France. Spokesperson Esmail Baghaei condemned the use of force by French security services, accusing the government of double standards regarding human rights enforcement.
The protests, which began in the Paris region in late September, were sparked by teacher shortages, overcrowded classrooms, and deteriorating school conditions. While initially peaceful, the demonstrations spread to cities including Marseille, Strasbourg, and Lille, with some incidents involving arson and property damage.
French authorities reported significant unrest, noting that approximately 2,000 people have been arrested since the start of the protests, with nearly two-thirds remaining in custody. On October 1 alone, 1,949 individuals were detained, and 305 police officers and gendarmes were injured. Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin confirmed the high number of arrests as the unrest continues to impact the country.
