US prepares massive economic sanctions against Iran

The United States is preparing a massive new package of economic sanctions against Iran, a move President Donald Trump has referred to as an “economic D-day.” US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent indicated that while sanctions will not immediately target countries trading with Iran, those nations will face serious consequences if they do not cease their commercial activities with Tehran.

The proposed sanctions are expected to target maritime shipping, the technology sector, and digital assets. While the US shifts its focus toward economic warfare, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth noted that the possibility of military strikes against Iran remains on the table.

In response, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has sent a letter to the United Nations Secretary-General and the Security Council, labeling the US threats as “state and economic terrorism.” Iran argues that these unilateral measures are designed to bypass international law and target the civilian population by restricting access to food, medicine, and energy. Iran has called on UN member states to reject these coercive measures and protect the sovereign economic decisions of other nations.
