Iran confirms detention of two Lithuanian citizens
Iran has officially confirmed the detention of two Lithuanian citizens, Daiva Zakažauskaitė and Erika Šlimaitė. The Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs received official notification of the detention on October 26, following a police search for the women after they lost contact with their families.
The women traveled from Lithuania to Turkey and then to Iran on October 7, with their last contact with relatives occurring on October 11. The specific reasons for their detention and the legal procedures involved have not been publicly disclosed.
Because Lithuania lacks a direct diplomatic presence in Iran capable of immediate visits, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is working to arrange consular contact through a consular official from another European Union member state. The goal of this visit is to assess the women's health, legal assistance, access to translators, and medical needs.
The Ministry has reiterated its strong recommendation that Lithuanian citizens avoid traveling to Iran and advised those currently in the country to leave immediately.
