Iran confirms intentional internet speed reductions

Iranian government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani has confirmed that authorities occasionally reduce internet speeds, citing the need to protect databases and internet-based services during wartime conditions. This admission follows widespread reports from users and media regarding significant slowdowns and service disruptions across the country.

Officials within the Ministry of Communications have indicated that total internet shutdowns remain a possibility in the event of renewed military attacks. Furthermore, there is growing concern among Iranian authorities regarding the expansion of Starlink usage. Officials have described the satellite service as a threat to cyberspace governance because it operates independently of the national network. Mohammad Hafez Hokmi, a deputy at the Ministry of Communications, suggested that in future crises, the government might be forced to consider cutting electricity if satellite services continue to bypass domestic controls.

Previously, Iran experienced a massive 88-day internet outage following the start of conflict between the US and Israel, which NetBlocks described as the longest nationwide outage recorded globally. While President Masoud Pezeshkian had previously ordered the restoration of international internet access, domestic hardliners and the IRGC have expressed opposition to full reopening, citing ongoing security threats.
