Iran conflict and energy disruptions impact global emissions

The second administration of Donald Trump has faced significant foreign policy challenges, including a protracted war with Iran that has impacted the global economy. Following the closure of the Strait of Hormuz by Tehran, energy shipments from the Middle East have been disrupted, leading to a reduction in global oil and gas consumption.

According to analysis of International Energy Agency data, this disruption has caused a decline in global oil demand, projected to drop 2.5 percent in 2026 compared to the previous year. This reduction in consumption has resulted in a significant decrease in overall carbon emissions, an outcome described as inadvertent given the administration's energy policies. The shift in energy markets comes as allies in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East seek to reduce their dependence on the United States by forming new trade and defense agreements.
